Police have submitted the case files on 19 of 23 suspects to prosecutors over the deadly clash that erupted in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, last month. But no officers were among the suspects named.

Adj. Sr. Comr. Sukarman Husein, the provincial police spokesman, said on Wednesday that the suspects listed in the 19 files would soon stand trial for their roles in the clash between the police and residents who were protesting mining operations in the area.

At least two protesters were killed and seven injured when the police opened fire on them in the incident on Dec. 24. Although five officers were reprimanded for excessive use of force, none were named as criminal suspects.

Sukarman said there was still a possibility that the officers could be named suspects, stressing that no one was exempt from the law.

“The disciplinary hearing [of the five officers] isn’t the end of the story; there will be a follow-up,” he said.
