Miranda Goeltom was grilled by antigraft investigators on Monday for the first time since being named a suspect in the Rp 24 billion ($2.7 million) bribery scandal surrounding her appointment to a top post at the central bank.

Leaving the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) office after a four-hour interrogation, she remained tight-lipped about the case, including whether she knew that Rp 24 billion in checks were given to legislators to appoint her the Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor in 2004.

“I don’t know about that. Why don’t you ask the person who gave them?” she said.

She also declined to comment on whether her appointment was backed by Bank Artha Graha, to which the traveler’s checks have been traced.

Miranda said she was questioned by the KPK on whether any legislators had promised to vote for her in the selection process.

“I said no. They also asked if anyone else had promised me that I would definitely win, and I said no,” she said.

“There were no questions about [the source of the money].”

Miranda has been questioned several times before in connection with the case, in which 28 sitting and former legislators have been convicted for taking the checks. But the former central bank deputy governor was only named a suspect last week.

Priharsa Nugraha, a KPK spokesman, said Miranda was called in on Monday for questioning not as a suspect, but as a witness against another suspect, Nunun Nurbaetie.

Nunun, the wife of Adang Daradjatun, the former National Police deputy chief, is alleged to have distributed the checks to legislators via one of her employees, Ari Malangjudho.

Johan Budi, another KPK spokesman, said they needed Miranda’s testimony because they were preparing to prosecute Nunun’s case.

“Maybe by next week we’ll have it ready to submit to the next step,” he said.

“Because we’re getting ready for that, we needed Miranda to testify so that we can complete the dossier on Nunun.”
