Ah, I see the media frenzy already starts with TVOne seemingly having a special agreement to take footage of this terrorist on his flight to Indonesia. I thought it was Black Ops.

I quote Ansyaad Mbai, head of the Anti-Terrorism Agency "It was secret operation. The team who picked him up consisted of police, immigration, BIN [State Intelligence Agency] and the Foreign Ministry,” So, where's the TVOne team?

Clever move this by Washington - It explicitly puts the onus on Indonesia (and SBY particularly) to ensure justice is done and this mass murderer gets an appropriate sentance - Unlike other cop outs by our judicary when it comes to islamic extremists this will be visible all over the world and more importantly in the 3 major Indo funders (Oz/Japan/ND) all of which lost people

SBY has been set up nicely - he either enforces the law and upsets the extremists or does not and upsets his funders... With Naz probably spilling the beans in Washington (why else would he be there??) the next few months may be very very difficult for our elite

IN the background I have noticed that a number of US and Oz politicians calling for a massive reduction in funding to Indo regarding anti terror and also schooling

Last but not least.... It was so secret it was run in Washington Post the day before he arrived... Why oh why do we always have to 'big up' our part??

I look forward to WongDeso's comments - since abstaining from condemnation is without question supporting Patak and Islamic Terrorism .

Alright, so he admits to be the one who built the Bali bomb, BUT(!) he is in poor psychological health (who really cares - he's got the mind of a murderer and mass killer since a long time) AND what's even more important, for whatever legal reasons he cannot be prosecuted under the Anti=Terror law. SO I guess, 12 years plus a few sessions of the homegrown and praised

(but of course completely failed) de-radicalization program.

My best guess 15 years initial sentence, every year for special days etc. a few years off - out in max. 6 years. And of coursem his highly paid, specialized lawyer team is already waiting to convince the judges that he is a changed man, polite in court, the only breadwinner, has never been charged before, that he feels redemption, and so on and on (the usual blabla).

And the world will be watching but,as usual, Indonesia's justice system will just shrug off the remarks.

According to nowadays Indonesian justice he will probably get a suspended sentence of maximally 6 months in jail. After all, he didn't know his victims at the time he was assembling the bombs.

Indonesian militant Umar Patek, who was brought back to Jakarta from Pakistan under tight security on Thursday morning, has admitted to making the bombs used in the deadly 2000 Christmas Eve and 2002 Bali bombings, an official said on Thursday.

Ansyaad Mbai, head of the Anti-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), confirmed that the suspected terrorist said that he had been involved in the manufacture of the explosives that killed 19 in 2000 and 202 in 2002.

Ansyaad stressed, however, that any admission of guilt by Patek would be a matter for the courts.

Another anti-terror officer who wished to remain anonymous said that Patek had not been questioned upon his return to Jakarta due to his poor “psychological” condition, which could imply that the terror suspect’s admission of guilt was freely offered.

Patek’s return to Indonesia has raised fears that he could become a flash point for the nation’s radical Islamic community, which in turn could lead to complications in trying him for his alleged crimes.

Ansyaad on Thursday said that despite being unable to retroactively prosecute Patek under the newer Anti-Terror Law, he would still face justice.

Patek, who had a $1 million bounty on his head, would be charged with premeditated murder and the Emergency Law on Explosives, Ansyaad said.

“Yes, he cannot be prosecuted under the Anti-Terrorism Law because it cannot be imposed retroactively, but it doesn’t mean that he could not be prosecuted. He is a murderer and bomb-maker, which also breaches the Criminal Code. Its now up to the investigators.”

Ansyaad also offered new details into the operation to bring Patek back to Indonesia.

“It was secret operation. The team who picked him up consisted of police, immigration, BIN [State Intelligence Agency] and the Foreign Ministry,” Ansyaad said at his office in Central Jakarta.
