Manila. Indonesia's foreign minister says the smuggling of firearms between the southern Philippines and his country has remained serious and both countries are taking steps to curb the problem.

Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said Tuesday he has no details on the magnitude of the smuggling but it has been "sufficiently serious" for the two countries to regard it with the "highest priority."

Natalegawa says the problem will be among the concerns to be tackled when he meets his Philippine counterpart, Albert del Rosario, Wednesday for a review of bilateral ties.

Indonesian authorities fear firearms smuggled from the southern Philippines might land on the hands of Muslim extremists.
