Makes you wonder who the 'real' bajingan is - the police or the villain?

Seems a lot of people that the police catch are 'conveniently' shot in the thigh or in the back of the knee, seems like the usual tactic by the police to stop the villain running off.

I was once in prison in Yogyakarta and met a guy there who had suffered the same painful fate of having a gun fired (twice) into his leg.

The Jakarta Police on Friday arrested a notorious gang leader for his alleged role in the murder of Sanex Steel head Tan Hari Tantono last month, a source close to the case said.

The source said that John Kei, who controls rackets in Jakarta, resisted his arrest, which took place at the C’One Hotel in East Jakarta on Friday evening, forcing police to open fire.

John, the source said, was shot in the thigh. He also tried to attack police officers. After he was shot, the suspect was taken to the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta.

“When we arrested him he was consuming methamphetamine with an actress,” the source said.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto would neither confirm nor deny the arrest.

“I cannot say anything for now,” he said.

Police have been investigating link between John and the murder of 50-year-old Tan Hari Tantono, also known as Ayung, the head of Sanex Steel.

Ayung was found with stab wounds on his neck and stomach at the Swiss-Belhotel in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, on Jan. 26.

Three people confessed to the murder, saying that they were enraged at Ayung after he refused to pay them Rp 600 million ($66,600) that he owed them because they had collected debts on his behalf.

But when police obtained the hotel’s surveillance camera footage of the room where Ayung was killed, it showed John had entered the room after the three men had left.

The footage led police to believe that there were other possible motives aside from the trio’s claim. Two more suspects, identified as D.N. and K.P., have since been arrested.

John has been in prison several times. The last was in 2009, when he was found guilty by the Surabaya District Court in East Java of cutting off the fingers of his two cousins. He was released after serving six months of his eight-month prison term.

Members of John’s gang, comprising mainly of transmigrants from Maluku, had also been convicted of a variety of crimes.

In April 2010, members of John’s gang were involved in a clash with members of a Flores gang at the upscale Blowfish nightclub in South Jakarta. The brawl left two people dead.

Later that year, members of the two gangs again clashed violently outside the South Jakarta District Court, where suspects for the Blowfish case were being tried. Both gangs vie for control of security and protection rackets in South Jakarta.

In 2004, the notorious Southeast Maluku gang led by John clashed with a North Maluku gang led by the late Basri Sangaji at a West Jakarta nightclub.

During the ensuing trial, John’s older brother was killed in front of the West Jakarta District Court.
