The National Police announced on Monday that it had arrested a suspect for allegedly hacking its Web site in May.

The head of the National Police's cybercrimes unit, Sr. Comr. Tommy Watiliu, said they were still investigating the case.

"We are still working on this," he told the Jakarta Globe on Monday.

Tommy declined to identify the suspect and state their motives. "We will explain later, after everything is clear," he said.

A source at the National Police stated that the suspected hacker was a second-year college student majoring in communications at a university in Yogyakarta.

"Besides the National Police's Web site, the hacker also managed to manipulate the sites of local police departments in Papua, Gorontalo and Kalimantan," the source said.

The police’s Web site, www.polri.go.id, was hacked last month, redirecting  traffic from the homepage to a message that read: “There is no God except Allah. Muhammad is the servant and messenger of Allah.”

It also urged enemies of Islam to beware. “We use this site to support the mujahideen, to help them spread this message: Rise up, you lions of Islam,” read the message, which since has been removed.
