The Central Jakarta Police have charged the man who attacked a tvOne crew on Monday night, even though a medical examination found that he was likely to be mentally ill.

Adil Firmansyah Islami, 27, pulled a knife as he approached a team that was recording talk show “Apa Kabar Indonesia Malam” at the Wisma Nusantara building. Adil injured a cameraman, Dadang, before being restrained by building security.

“Adil is now a suspect charged with assault,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharudin Djafar said on Wednesday, adding that the man could face a sentence of up to five years in prison if convicted.

The spokesman confirmed that police-appointed psychologists have said the man could be mentally disturbed.

“We still charged him, it is up to the judges whether he can be held responsible for his crime,” Baharudin said.

The head of the Jakarta Police psychology unit, Adj. Sr. Comr. Arif Nurcahyo, said that there were indications that Adil had mental problems.

“[Adil] likes to laugh on his own and he doesn’t respond to questions, but we still need to dig deeper,” he said. “He is aware of what happened although he claimed he was under the control of voices inside his head.”

Adil, the police officer said, is a fan of AKIM host Grace Natalie but loathes tvOne for having the number 1 in its logo, which Adil believes is a symbol that should be reserved for God.

Arif described Adil as a loner who might have had a traumatic childhood. “He has the same symptoms as those with anti-social behavior. He likes to spend time alone in his room,” the officer said, adding that Adil also exhibits signs of obsessive compulsive disorder.

Adil had also sought treatments from traditional and spiritual healers, the officer added, but not with any professional psychiatrists. “[Adil] said that several clerics had tried to help him but we are not sure, that is just what he claims,” Arif said.

For the past month Adil had been living in Bekasi, West Java, with a relative. He moved there from Cilacap in Central Java.
