"an occasion where a member of the police force has helped anybody other than themselves?"

I can personally vouch for members of the Indonesian police force assisting me to lighten the heavy burden in my wallet, on several occasions :)

Blighty - I can confirm that on 2 occasions I have been helped by traffic Police. The first was when a motorcycle ran the lights and I swerved to miss him only to narrowly miss another car. The policeman pulled me over to check I was OK before speeding off in hot pursuit The second was whilst attending an arts festival - we could not get across the road and a policeman approached asked where we were going and then stopped the traffic... Both of these occurred in Bali in the last few years BTW

On the otherside I have had numerous attempts at being fleeced by Java's finest once for stopping at a red traffic light when he had waved me through.. From his vantage point behind the lights which you cannot actually see

“We will install new traffic signs and deploy officers to help drivers,” Pinem said.

“We'll do our best to assist the public with traffic information,” the head of the center Adj. Comr. Salim Margie said.

Do they actually believe what they are saying? Has there ever, in the whole history of Indonesia, been an occasion where a member of the police force has helped anybody other than themselves?

The Jakarta Metro Police and the Jakarta municipal government have closed the north access to Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio, South Jakarta due to the construction of the Kampung Melayu-Tanah Abang flyover. The flyover construction begins on Monday and it is estimated that it will take three months.

The head of the Jakarta Metro Police's Traffic Directorate, Adj. Sr. Comr. Kanton Pinem, suggested drivers use an alternative route.

“We will install new traffic signs and deploy officers to help drivers,” Pinem said.

Vehicles from Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio or Ambassador Mall heading to Jalan Rasuna Said or Menteng will be directed to Jalan Denpasar Raya Utara. Drivers must continue to Jalan Pedurenan Masjid Raya before making a right turn to Jalan Rasuna Said.

Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio is a busy street which connects South Jakarta with South and East Jakarta. Traffic delays are expected daily during rush hour.

The police encourage the public to contact the Traffic Management Center's call center to receive traffic information or register complaints.

The hotline number is 021 527 6001.

“We'll do our best to assist the public with traffic information,” the head of the center Adj. Comr. Salim Margie said.
