Tangerang Police are investigating the death of man at his home in Serpong on Thursday.

Charles Leopold Siwi, 71, reportedly suffered a heart attack minutes after being held up at gunpoint by a group of armed robbers who had entered the Villa Melati Mas residential complex.

Serpong Police sub-precinct chief Heribertus Ompusunggu said on Friday that police had not yet been able to identify the gang of robbers.

“We will continue our investigations,” he said. “The incident occurred at 7:30 p.m. We believe the victim had been in his living room watching television when the four robbers entered his home, which was unlocked.”

Heribertus said neighbors had seen the robbers entering the victim’s home, but they did not become suspicious.

“[The victim] often received visitors, so neighbors had not been suspicious when they saw the robbers enter his home,” he said.

“The robbers reportedly arrived in Kijang Innova. The victim’s main gate, garage gate and the gate to the front door were all left unlocked. The robbers easily entered through the front gate and through the garage before reaching the living room.”

The house had also been occupied by the victim’s children and his 9-year-old grandson. Heribertus said Charles was forced to show the robbers the whereabouts of all the valuable items in the house, which were then collected in the living room.

“The suspects forced the victim to remain completely silent. He was then tied up. That’s when he apparently began to breathe heavily, suffering severe shortness of breath. [Charles] had a history of heart problems. His family said he died 30 minutes after the robbers made away with the goods,” Heribertus said.

The police officers added that just before he died, Charles managed to speak some words of advice to his children.

“We believe this incident is connected to a recent spate of robberies that has been terrorizing East Jakarta. The modus operandi appears to be the same. The robbers target homes that are routinely left unlocked,” Heribertus said.

“According to his grandson, the gang members wore masks. However, according to another of the victim’s relatives, the gang members were not in masks. I urge all Jakarta residents never to leave their homes or garage doors unlocked.”
