353553I meant to say "OFF the road" and not "of the road".
How about getting these poor kids of the road once and for all and start financing a governmental social institution which can give them back a decent life. I know there are some private efforts done but that is just a drop on the hot stone. About the East Jkt. Police - I wonder who and how they are getting examined "since a long time"! Hopefully in a decent and human way!
Kiai Carita - you been on a sabbatical? Didn't read your postings for some time. Nice to know you're still with us.
Well at least the street kids are getting treated better than rabid dogs. A little better, that is.

As the apparent death toll from an alleged serial killer who targeted
young boys continued to rise on Tuesday, police said they would round
up street children and conduct physical examinations for indications of
sexual abuse.
“On Thursday, we’ll search for buskers at
shelters and public places such as intersections, bus and train
stations, bridges and anywhere else they usually gather,” said North
Jakarta Police Comr. Adex Yudiswan on Tuesday. “We’ll take doctors with
us.”
The police will work with the National Commission for
Child Protection (Komnas Anak) and the city’s Social Affairs Agency to
locate the estimated 4,000 street children in Jakarta.
Snr.
Comr. Hassanudin, East Jakarta Police chief, said similar operations
had been taken previously to identify criminals and remove them from
the streets.
“We have done these [kind of operations] for a
long time,” Hassanudin said, adding that in addition to a physical
examination, the children would be screened for the HIV/AIDS virus.
The
police plan was labeled an overreaction and “arrogant” by the
Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), a nongovernmental
organization that focuses on street children.
“If they really
want to examine the street children, they should conduct thorough
medical examinations,” KPAI chairwoman Masnah Sari said.
Masnah said that the government should also have a plan to get children off the streets.
“If they are on the street, no test can protect them from being abused,” she said.
Meanwhile,
Haposan Hutagalung, the lawyer for the accused serial killer, Bayquni,
also known as Babe, said his client allegedly admitted to killing an
additional victim, which would take the tally to eight.
“The
victim’s name is Teguh, aged 12 years old,” Haposan said, adding that
the new admission came during Bayquni’s latest interrogation.
Teguh
was murdered in Kuningan, West Java in 1998, the lawyer said. Police
have recovered body parts from the scene, although the head and torso
were never found.
Komnas Anak says the true number of victims
could be as high as 15 children, as evidenced by the number of
photographs Bayquni had collected .
“His photo collection is vast,” Komnas Anak Secretary General Arist Merdeka Sirait said.
“According
to the street kids looked after by Babe, the ones in the pictures were
his favorites . He could have more than 15 victims,” Arist said.
The commission also said that the panic over Bayquni’s atrocities has led to a sharp rise in reports of missing children.
