South Jakarta Police are threatening to forcibly arrest George Junus Aditjondro, prominent Suharto-era activist and controversial author of “Unraveling the Cikeas Octopus: Behind the Bank Century Scandal.”

George was named a suspect for allegedly assaulting Democratic Party politician Ramadhan Pohan during the launch of the book in December 2009.

“His [case] dossier was declared complete by prosecutors last month,” said Sr. Comr. Gatot Edy Pramono, South Jakarta Police Chief.

George has been charged with “offensive treatment,” covering articles of the Criminal Code on battery and minor maltreatment, which carry maximum penalties of one year and three months in jail respectively.

The incident saw George throw a copy of his book in the face of Ramadhan, who arrived uninvited at the book launch to defend President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The book alleged that some of the Bank Century bailout money was used by Yudhoyono’s Democrats ahead of the 2009 legislative and presidential elections. The incident was captured by television cameras.

“We have sent him two summonses to appear at the South Jakarta Police headquarters, but he has never shown up,” Gatot said. “We are now considering forcing him to come.”

George was named a suspect in February last year. Gatot did not elaborate on why it took so long for the case to move forward, though George released a new book, “Cikeas Is Spreading Its Tentacles,” last month.
