Dozens of officers from the police and the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) raided Surabaya’s infamous prostitution complex Gang Dolly on Wednesday night.

The raid is something of an annual tradition, conducted to search for “new faces” as part of ongoing efforts to prevent more prostitutes from working in the brothel area.

Prior to the fasting month of Ramadan, there were as many as 1,128 prostitutes working in Dolly’s 332 brothels, said Bambang Hartono, head of Putat Jaya in the East Java capital.

“Let’s hope that the number will decrease instead of increasing after Idul Fitri,” Bambang told Kompas.com, adding that it was common for prostitutes to take friends or relatives from their hometowns as new recruits.

“If we find new recruits, we will demand their pimps send them back home immediately,” Bambang said.

Brothel owners who increased their number of prostitutes would be closed, he said.

The regulations are part of Surabaya’s attempts to eradicate prostitution.

Bambang said the social office in Surabaya was active in organizing courses in entrepreneurship to teach prostitutes useful skills that could be used to find alternative employment.

Bambang claimed that many had left their old trade and used their new skills to make a living.

“They returned to their hometowns and opened small businesses. Some got married and became housewives.”
