Jakarta. The Jakarta Police have unveiled extensive plans to regulate traffic and ratchet up security in the capital for Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday.

Among the measures, traffic in the vincinity of the Merdeka Palace in Central Jakarta will be diverted to other areas on Aug. 17 to ensure security for national and foreign dignitaries attending the ceremony there, Jakarta Police Traffic Chief Comr. Condro Kirono said on Friday.

“As in previous years, the Independence Day ceremony will be held at the Merdeka Palace before scores of foreign ambassadors and other state guests, so we have to divert the traffic from that area,” he said.

At least nine roads will be blocked during the flag-raising ceremony from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., and the lowering ceremony from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Condro said.

They include Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, Jalan Veteran Raya, Jalan Veteran I, Jalan Veteran II, Jalan Majapahit, Jalan Silang Monas, Jalan Museum and Jalan Budi Kemuliaan.

Only guests invited to the Merdeka Palace will be allowed to enter those roads.

TransJakarta buses running through the area will also be diverted until 7 p.m.

The buses will still operate during the day, although with slightly altered routes.

These include the buses serving corridors 1, 2 and 3, which run from Blok M to Kota, Harmoni to Pulo Gadung, and Kalideres to Harmoni, respectively.

At midnight the night before, police will also divert traffic away from the National Heroes Cemetery in Kalibata, South Jakarta, in preparation for the president’s visit there.

Local residents will be banned from setting off firecrackers all day, in a mark of respect for the country’s independence heroes.

“Any violation will be dealt with very seriously,” Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar said on Friday.

A total of 1,715 police officers will be deployed for the various ceremonies, including those assigned to armored cars and crowd-control units.

Water canons and riot police will be stationed around the Merdeka Palace.
