Some parts of Jakarta, including the business district, were in the dark on Wednesday morning.

Purnowo Willy, general manager of state electric company PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara, told online news portal detik.com that the blackout was a result of a technical problem at the Muara Karang steam power plant.

“In Central Jakarta, the blackouts occurred on Jalan Sudirman, Jalan MH Thamrin, Jalan Kemuliaan and Jalan Kebon Sirih. In South Jakarta, it was in the Blok M area and Warung Buncit,” Willy said.

Parts of Tangerang, including the Cengkareng area, also lost power.

“The electricity at Soekarno Hatta Airport is on,” Willy added.

However, Sudaryanto the corporate secretary of airport management company PT Angkasa Pura II, begged to differ.

“The electricity from PLN just went off,” Sudaryanto said, adding that airport activity was not hampered because the generator set automatically turned on.

He acknowledged that PLN had notified the airport about the blackout. “According to the information they gave us, it happened because PLN is experiencing problems at Muara Karang power plant,” Sudaryanto said.

Purnomo promised that PLN would be restoring electricity as soon as possible.
