433053Thanks Roland. The idea is certainly appealing but I am a poor organizer right now. Actually, my movements and diet has to be controlled due to my cardiac disorder. I TRULY HOPE "SOMEONE" WILL KICK THIS OFF!
"Stammtisch" sounds German. You have inspired my appetite once more for my favorite German Fried Pork Knuckles. Yes, I just love this dish but....no more! I am scheduled for my bi-annual check up soon, in Singapore.
@Greg:
Many have successfully obtained their "stay permits" year after year without very much hassle.
Get yourself a reliable agent.
"Enakajah" has kindly explained it most explicitly. Thanks to him, a few of our guys on this site are feeling better.
The benefit Indonesia gains from working Expats staying here certainly warrants some kind of security for those who get married to an Indonesian and intend to stay indefinately. I am a teacher and am here to educate Indonesian children (and adults) in English, I have married an Indinesian girl, (and support 8 of her family) but have to wonder each year if I will be successful in getting a Kitas for the next year. At least please make it easier for those who have lived and worked here for more than 5 years to gain 'permanent residency.'

@Valkyrie - honestly I would actually like to meet some of the people posting personally - including yourself!
Actually ) thought it would be nice to have a "Get Together" once a month (Jalan Jaksa?) and make a kind of Stammtisch" (sorry I don't know the English expression for that)- not only to exchange views but maybe also once in a while organize some charity projects etc.
Val, that's exactly what these ladies organizations are all about. They are all ladies married to foreigners and they have regular get together events and seminars and parties and all the rest of it. Ask your wives, most of them will know of one or two of the organizations or at least have heard of them.
A large number of people just contact them for assistance and info others join.
This has been around for a very long time even before they started addressing the law.
SW. The GOI recognize marriage certificates from most foreign countries. The fact that the couple may be of mixed religion is not the issue in this case as the authorities here are not responsible for the actual union. What is acknowledged is that the couple have a legally registered and recognized marriage certificate from a country and body that Indonesia recognizes. As long as your union was registered with a civil authority in the US then you can be issued with a certificate of registration that your marriage is legal.
You will need a good quality wedding photo to attach to the application and it is attached to the final certificate you receive.
This takes about 10-14 days in Jakarta with a good agent. Not hard and as long as you provide all the documentation and it is valid then it is OK. All we provided were scans not even the original. The fine was 250k for not registering it immediately after the wedding. We weren't here but that is hardly the point as far as the GOI is concerned.
As Devine says a lot has changed in 17 years. Regardless of what you read in the papers and else where most of the change is for the better.
I no longer need to go to Immigration for photo and fingerprints. plug in my old and new passport numbers and the details are in the system. This is from a registration done in Aceh and on record instantly in Jakarta and in Bali. Things are getting much better.
The ladies organizations by the way are going after immigration over the citizenship of the kids again. Getting the 18 year old threshold removed. It might take a few years but I think Immigration and the Ministry of Justice and human rights know better than to get in their way.
Indonesians married to foreigners have welcomed a new immigration draft bill they say will enable families to stay together.
The House of Representatives and the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights have agreed on a draft bill that would no longer require foreign spouses to annually renew their residence permit abroad and would give them the right to work. The draft bill is to be presented to a House plenary for passage next week.
Nitta Mehraj, from the B4 Club, said on Friday that the changes were important as the main point of building a family was to be able to stay together without going through complicated procedures.
“As a family, we want to live and stay together,” said Nitta, who has been married to an Indian national for four years.
“Indonesia is also their home, why do they have to extend their Kitas [temporary residence permit]?” she said, referring to her family members. “[Extending the Kitas] is complicated for them and it is expensive.”
Foreigners’ temporary residence permits currently have to be renewed each year.
Yustinah Hoelger, who has been living with her German husband for the past decade, welcomed the news, saying it would allow her and her husband, a medical doctor, to return and live in Indonesia.
“The main obstacle for us to live in Indonesia was the constant need to renew my husband’s Kitas and his work permit. We are now seriously considering returning to Indonesia,” said Yustinah. But she also said that to return to Indonesia, the couple needed certainty on the matter of property ownership.
“We certainly want to know what can and cannot be owned by a foreigner married to an Indonesian national,” she said.
However, Eva Kusuma Sundari, a lawmaker from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), said that the matter of property ownership for foreign spouses and their children would be addressed separately in another draft bill, on agrarian matters.
Julie Mace, a representative for the International Rainbow Alliance (APAB) and the Indonesian Mixed Marriage Society (PerCa Indonesia), praised the bill as being a notable improvement over the 1992 Immigration Law.
“I can sense that this new draft bill is very good and roughly all that we wanted has been granted, such as that our children can stay in Indonesia,” she said.
Under the new rules, expatriates married to Indonesians would automatically be granted a permanent residence permit as long as the Indonesian spouse can provide sponsorship. Children from mixed marriages would also be eligible for permanent residency if they opted to take the nationality of the foreign parent.
The bill would also allow these expatriates to stay in the country after divorcing their Indonesian partner as long as their marriage had lasted at least 10 years.
Foreign spouses in a mixed marriage would also be allowed to work in the country. Currently they have to seek a sponsor to be able to work in Indonesia.
Nitta said there were still other things that needed to change, but were not yet included in the new draft bill.
“We would like no age limitation to be set for children from a mixed marriage for having a dual citizenship,” she said. “We want them to be allowed to keep their dual citizenship as this will be more advantageous.”
Under the 2006 Citizenship Law, children born from mixed parents would automatically obtain dual citizenship — Indonesian and the nationality of the foreign parent. However, they have to pick one after turning 18.
