Maybe some enlightened person can explain why the prosecutors are so serious about this Ariel case when there are true political, religious, industrial crimes, and government graft and corruption on the most massive scale. Who is paying these guys to provide the smokescreen while Indonesia is being raped?

Haha How about the good examples shown by the politicians? Indonesia is in denial about sex with prostitution rife in every city. This whole case is just about catering to the hypocritical, religious fundamentalists

Bandung. Prosecutors on Thursday recommended that Peterpan frontman Nazril “Ariel” Irham be jailed for five years and fined Rp 250 million ($28,000) for distributing pornographic videos on the Internet.

“The defendant has also been proven to be the man in the pornographic videos that have since been distributed nation-wide,” a prosecutor, Rusmanto, told the Bandung District Court.

He was referring to the sex videos that feature a man resembling Ariel having sex separately with TV presenters Cut Tari and Luna Maya, who is the singer’s girlfriend.

The videos were posted on the Internet in June 2010.

Rusmanto told the court that the testimony of witnesses and the evidence presented in court proved the defendant was guilty of violating the Anti-Pornography Law as well as the Criminal Code.

He said Ariel was guilty of producing, distributing, broadcasting, renting or providing pornography — a charge that carries a sentence of between six months and 12 years.

“The defendant, as an artist, a public figure who is an idol to many, especially the younger generations, has failed to be a role model and to set a good example for his fans,” the prosecutor added.

Rusmanto said that should Ariel refuse or be unable to pay the Rp 250 million fine, he should be jailed for another three months.

The panel of judges is not bound by law to follow the prosecution’s recommendations.

Ariel’s lawyer, Otto Cornelis Kaligis, dismissed the sentencing demand and said the charges against his client should be dropped.

“The incident took place in 2005 and 2006 while the Anti-Pornography Law was only promulgated in 2008,” he said.

Ariel declined to comment on Thursday’s proceedings.

The trial will resume on Thursday to hear the defense plea.

While the trial was taking place inside, more than 100 people, mostly women, rallied outside the court to demand a heavy sentence for Ariel.

The protesters were outnumbered by some 200 police officers and security personnel, ensuring things didn’t get out of hand.
