A man who attacked a tvOne crew during the shooting of a talkshow on Monday night, injuring a cameraman, was expected to undergo psychiatric testing on Wednesday after giving the police differing motives for the incident.

Comr. Hengky Haryadi, the Central Jakarta Police’s chief of detectives, said on Tuesday that the suspect, 27-year-old Adil Firmansyah Islami from Cilacap, Central Java, could possibly be mentally disturbed, hence the constantly changing story.

“On Monday he claimed that he attacked the crew because of the number one used in the logo for tvOne,” he said.

When questioned by security guards at the Wisma Nusantara building, where the knife attack occurred, Adil claimed that “one can only represent God” and therefore could not be used by people.

“But after that, he claimed he did it because he was a fan of Grace Natalie,” Hengky said, referring to the host of the talk show being shot at the time.

“After that it’s been one motive after another.”

Police said that Adil, who had lived in Bekasi with a relative for the past month since moving from Cilacap, traveled from Bekasi to Wisma Nusantara in Central Jakarta by motorcycle taxi.

He then pulled a knife as he approached Grace and her crew standing outside the building’s lobby, where they regularly shoot the program “Apa Kabar Indonesia Malam,” injuring a cameraman, Dadang, before being restrained by building security.

Baharudin Djafar, a Jakarta Police spokesman, said another motive that Adil had given for the attack was that he was upset with tvOne for biased reporting.

He added that the police had found nothing indicating that Adil was linked to any terrorist or extremist groups, with the suspect also saying that he had been working alone.
