The Pussycat Dolls are set on seducing the world as they perform demanding dance routines in sexy outfits and ask the audience to “loosen up their buttons.”
As part of their Doll Domination World Tour, the group will fly from Australia to perform one show only in Jakarta on Tuesday night before moving on to Bangkok and Singapore.
But they may need to find another way to seduce Indonesians: Their raunchy moves could easily ruffle a few feathers now that the anti-pornographic laws are in place. The president of Mahaka Entertaiment, Hasani Abdulgani, said the promoter had asked the group to ensure the performance is “not too hot.”
The group was fined in Malaysia after their concert in 2006 for indecency. Jessica Sutta of the Dolls told MTV last year that the performers have learned their lesson and were happy to cover up out of respect for their host countries.
Head Pussycat Nicole Scherzinger, born in Hawaii to a Filipino father, told Channel V recently that the Dolls loved their Asian fans and wanted to perform as often for them as they could.
And Indonesian fans have not been disappointed so far:. The Pussycat Dolls’ debut album, “PCD,” has gone platinum in the country, selling more than 15,000 copies, while “Doll Domination,” which was released in September 2008, has so far gone gold, selling more than 10,000.
The Pussycat Dolls started out in the mid-’90s as a burlesque dance troupe formed by Robin Antin, a dancer, choreographer and music video director.
The group originally included Christina Applegate, pop star Christina Aguilera and “Baywatch” alumni Carmen Electra.
In an interview with Ellen Degeneres, Applegate said that the group was essentially formed in her garage.
“We had sewn-together costumes and we had to dance on this little carpet stage,” Applegate recalls.
Along with an ever-changing lineup and guest vocalists, the troupe secured a residency spot at the Viper Room, a Los Angeles club owned by Johnny Depp, from 1995 to 2001.
The troupe would perform in lingerie and pin-up girl outfits while performing old jazz standards.
Interscope Records approached the troupe with the idea of turning them into pop artists. The group was recast and now includes Scherzinger, Sutta, Ashley Roberts, Kimberly Wyatt and Melody Thornton.
The Pussycat Dolls released “PCD” in 2005 with the hit-single “Don’t Cha,” featuring legendary rapper Busta Rhymes.
But there have been a few bumps in the road. The group is now performing across Australia and local media have reported the Dolls are being shown up by their support act, Lady Gaga.
The Australian daily even referred to some of the group’s dance routines as “sluggish.”
In a review of their album “Doll Domination,” Rolling Stone wrote: “With 15 cuts in all, the album sounds like the Dolls just threw everything they had against the charts to see if anything would stick.”
Still, the Pussycat Dolls are a huge success. Their fist hit, “Don’t Cha,” sold six million copies worldwide and their concerts have continually sold out. The first show in Melbourne last week sold out in 90 minutes.
“[The Pussycat Dolls] is about singing and dancing in front of a mirror by yourself and having fun,” Antin said.
