The Corruption Eradication Commission dropped a bombshell during its appearance before the House of Representatives Commission III for legal affairs on Wednesday, announcing that the son of respected lawyer Adnan Buyung Nasution had been named a suspect for the alleged fictitious procurement of cattle in 2005.
Adnan is a a reform-minded attorney and former presidential adviser.
The disclosure came during a uncomfortable appearance by the commission, also known as the KPK.
One lawmaker, Desmon J Mahesa of the opposition Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), initially questioned whether KPK deputy chairmen Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra Hamzah were allowed to appear at the hearing given they are officially suspects for alleged abuse of power and extortion.
The charges are widely considered to be bogus and stem from an alleged attempt by elements of the National Police, Attorney General’s Office and others to take down the respected antigraft commission.
“With all due respect to Pak Bibit and Pak Chandra, do we need to consider if they have the rights to speak in the hearing regarding their current statuses as suspects?” Desmon asked.
The head of the commission, Benny K Harman, said the pair did have the right to speak because their case had not been finalized as of yet.
During the hearing, which is still underway, the commission is expected to question the KPK officials about the ongoing Bank Century investigation, among other things.
