Workers returning home to Indonesia from Malaysia and Batam ahead of the Idul Fitri holiday have been targeted by criminals in three separate cases this week, prompting police to warn travelers to take extra precautions.

In all three cases, the perpetrators were said to have offered drinks laced with drugs, and then made off with victims’ belongings while they were passed out.

On Wednesday, Saleh and Husin, two migrant workers who had just returned from Malaysia, narrowly fell victim to a robbery at Kampung Rambutan bus station in East Jakarta.

Husin told police the two had met three men soon after they landed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Police said the men told Saleh and Husin that they were also migrant workers from Malaysia on their way to the Kampung Rambutan station to catch a bus to Purbalingga, Central Java.

Saleh and Husin were heading to the same bus station to take a commute home to Tegal in Central Java.

Police said the men offered the pair some jamu , a traditional drink made from herbs.

Thinking that they had found new friends, police said, the two accepted the offer.

“I don’t really like jamu so I vomited as soon as I gulped it, but Saleh likes to drink jamu so he drank it all. He fainted soon afterward,” Husin told the police.

Fortunately for the pair, the suspects did not have time to steal their belongings, as Husin only passed out for a few minutes.

Also on Wednesday, a worker from Batam was found unconscious at Pulogadung bus station in East Jakarta.

His story was similar. He met two men at the airport who were “very friendly” and after a brief chat, he agreed to go with them to the bus station. The men offered him a drink to break the Ramadan fast, and that was the last he saw of them and his belongings. He lost Rp 10 million ($1,000) in cash, a mobile phone and a bag of clothes.

On Sunday, Slamet, a worker who had just returned from Batam, was found unconscious at Jalan Otista, East Jakarta.

Slamet told police he had just landed at the airport when two men approached him. Slamet told them he would catch a bus to his hometown in Purbalingga, from the Kampung Rambutan bus station. The men told him they were also from Purbalingga and asked him if they could go home together.

Later, the men offered him jamu and he accepted.

“I didn’t remember anything afterward. When I woke up I realized I lost everything I had: my bags, my wallet — as well as the Rp 5 million in it — and my cell phone,” Slamet told the Jakarta Globe. JG
