Riau, Indonesia. An Indonesian rubber plantation worker has been attacked and killed by a Sumatran tiger.

Hutomo, a government official in Riau province, said Rafi, 18, had been collecting latex from a rubber tree when he was attacked in Rokan Hilir on Monday.

“His parents became suspicious after they found traces of blood on the ground,” Hutomo told state news agency Antara. “They followed the blood and found him collapsed on the ground with a tiger next to him.”

He said the parents were able to scare the tiger away but it was too late to save their son.

Rokan Hilir is the scene of widespread deforestation and forest fires.

The Sumatran tiger is critically endangered and its habitat continues to shrink.
