BB what do you expect? a couple of thousand criminals, some of them killers rioting and the poor guys are left with what equipment and what support? They are untrained poorly paid have families and really are not prepared for quelling a riot. The real failure here is the corrupt system that fails at every stage except extracting money from the inmates and their families.

Why are there no riot control teams there? the Usual "no Budget" ......... But you are right it is unbelievable..... this started two days ago. It was on the cards that it would go from a minor fight to a major riot.... the real failing is that the correct riot control team was not brought in at that time...... I wonder how big the body count will be! disgraceful really.

Canberra. Rioting prisoners have taken over a prison on the Indonesian resort island of the Bali, Australian media said on Wednesday, with the government confirming it was urgently checking on the safety of Australian prisoners held there.

Authorities are struggling to regain control of Kerobokan jail after prison staff abandoned the facility during rioting that escalated on Tuesday night, Australia’s Fairfax news organization said on its Web sites.

The prison’s inmates include 12 Australian citizens, among them convicted drug-traffickers Schapelle Corby and the so-called Bali Nine.

“Consular staff in Bali are urgently seeking to confirm the safety and welfare of Australian prisoners at Kerobokan prison, which has been affected by rioting that began late on 21 February (Bali time),” an Australian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

The story is developing.
