Yogyakarta. The elaborate process of the much-anticipated royal wedding in Yogyakarta kicked off on Sunday with the groom-to-be, KPH Yudhanegara, attending a pre-wedding ritual symbolizing his entry into the royal family.

Yudhanegara, who is known as Achmad Ubaidillah, and his family were picked up by three royal carriages to undertake the nyantri, a required rite of passage because  the groom-to-be does not come from royalty.

His official wedding to Sultan Hamengkubuwono X's daughter, Nurastuti Wijareni, or GKR Bendara, will take place on Tuesday.

“The nyantri tradition is the main requirement in a royal wedding to symbolize that an outsider has become a part of the royal family,” Yudhanegara said.

Bendara underwent a different ritual on Sunday, called langkahan, or to ‘step over,’ which is a gesture of respect from a younger child to her unmarried sibling. The ritual was conducted because Bendara, the youngest of five, is going to get married before her older sister, GRA Abrajuwita.

In a gesture to seek her sister’s permission, Bendara gave her a set of outfits.

The wedding will take place on Tuesday, coinciding with the city’s 255th anniversary celebration, with thousands of guests in attendance.

The royal wedding has been highly anticipated, with hundreds of foreign and local journalists set to cover the event and TV stations reportedly planning special broadcasts from Yogyakarta.

The royal wedding party coordinator Yudhadiningrat said there will be 1,500 guests in attendance during the first reception and 1,000 attendees during the evening reception.
