Medan, N. Sumatera. The North Sumatra office of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) on Thursday was still unable to confirm rumors about a number of fatalities in a flood that hit Medan city earlier in the day.
The deluge had invaded thousands of houses in North Sumatra's provincial capital, with rumors flying that a number of people had died in the disaster.
"Until noon today, we have not received any information on any fatalities in the flooding," Johan Purba, head of disaster handling affairs at PMI's North Sumatra office, said on Thursday.
He said the PMI had deployed hundreds of volunteers in the inundated areas but so far there had been no report from its field workers about a death toll.
He conceded that he had heard rumors about two people having been carried away by flood currents in a canal and in the Deli river and also about four people who died after being electrocuted accidentally.
But the PMI could not yet verify the rumors before obtaining real evidence like the dead bodies of the victims.
"So far, what we have heard are rumors," he added.
Meanwhile, the head of operations of the Medan City Police, Commissioner Dadi Purba, also said he had no information about a death toll in the flood.
