The Indonesian rupiah rose to a 20-month high on Wednesday, leading a rally in emerging Asian currencies, as the Federal Reserve's ultra-loose policy prompted investors to move into riskier assets and hedge funds cut long-dollar positions.
The rupiah rallied three quarters of a percent to 9,090 against the dollar, its highest since mid-2008, after opening slightly stronger at 9,155.
"Some local corporate demand for dollars has limited the rupiah gains but it seems offshore appetite for Asian assets helped the local currency break 9,100 today," a Jakarta-based dealer said.
Traders said the rupiah benefited from SandP's decision to raise Indonesia's debt rating last Friday and from foreign capital inflows for investment in Indonesian bonds to be auctioned next week.
The currency is the second-best Asian performer so far this year behind the Malaysian ringgit, gaining 3.6 percent against the dollar.
