BB

she is in court as we speak

More interestingly however all the prison officials etc who got caught involved in the massive drugs ring (tonnes and tonnes not a few grams) are still drawing pay and have not yet charged - I wonder why?

Indonesia's biggest addiction is corruption. And that is the one that is bringing the country down, not narcotics. But that's SBY, latch onto anything to avoid having to deal with the real rot of Indonesia. Interesting to see his popularity ratings slipping yet again to an all-time low. He just doesn't get it. A joint or twenty would definitely make him a more interesting person.

Coincidentally, what did happen to Suharto's granddaughter caught with a police officer and other Elites in a hotel room with enough drugs on them to supply Glastonbury.

I think the govt/police are too focused on the devil from without and have taken little or no concrete action with the home grown/manufactured crops. Consider that over the last few months we have seen jail governors, prison officers, night club owners, the grand daughter of the former president, Govt Officials etc and many other implicated in serious drugs issues and yet not one of these people are on death row, indeed most of them are still free... One must ask why?

In 2010 there were 32,000 Indonesians arrested and only 17 given the death sentence (most still under review) Out of the 167 non Indonesians arrested 56 were given the death penalty...

I dont support the death penalty BTW I am just highlighting the inconsistancy and the tendancy to blame others and pretend we are all rosey

Interesting observation that the Indo 2008 figures are pretty close to the US figures - I would have imagined the US to be far worse - perhaps its all in the definition

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Sunday said that the efforts to tackle the use and trade of narcotics in the country were not sufficient.

On International Day Against Narcotics, Yudhoyono said that narcotic still posed a serious threat to the global community and Indonesia.

"Even though we have done many efforts, they have not been enough," he said in his speech.

He said that current efforts needed to be increased and expanded, and he urged the Anti Narcotics Agency (BNN) to be more active in the fight against drug crimes.

“We have to be more ambitious in eradicating narcotics crimes and abuse,” he said.

"These crime damage future generations, that nation's characteristic that in the future can ruin competitiveness," he said.

Goris Mere, head of BNN, said that narcotics use in the country was steadily increasing.

In 2008, he said, 1.99 percent of all citizens, or around 3.6 million, used narcotics. It is estimated that number increased to 2.21 in 2010.

"In 2015 if there is no comprehensive efforts on the issue, the number could increase to 2.8 percent, or 5.1 million people," he said.
