@jchay: agree with you. Indonesia = diversity and anyone who disagrees is not real indonesian. This country is built on this principle.

But what has changed to make indonesia A more violent and intolerent country in recent years? Ill tell yoU, its Saudi money infiltratIng schools, kampungs, mosques, and believe it or nOt, universities. Another reason is tHe lack of equality. A few super rich and too many poor. Obviously the poor get frUstrated, accept the gold from the middle east and follow the order (i.e. religious indoctrination leading to hate and violence).

And then there is the pathetic education system that resembles a long forgotten era. MemorIsE and repeat, like parrots. These students can't think for themselves. This is the reality in some schools in Lombok. The islamic boarding schools for orphans are sad and tough places to be. They students, following they daily routine, are deliberAtely deprived of sleep until they behave just like zombies. They never learn anything. Just eat, wash, recite the koran, and get a little sleep every now and again. Its very depressing that this happens in a country like indonesIa. And what I find eVen more depressing is that the smart, intelligent, educated rich people who I know are aware of it, just smile and do nothing. 'Tolerance' has a confused meaning here. We should be tolerant of others, but indonesians should not tolerate this oppression of their own children. Again, as usual, foreign religion is the true root of the problem.

I'm sorry Mr President but you seriously got the order all wrong.

"Bhinneka Tunggal Ika". Diversity is part of Indonesia since we don't know when (well at least since 1945 when the nation of Indonesia was "born"). Thus diversity CANNOT be the issue, it has been a part of you and me and Indonesia as one country. We live with diversity, Indonesia has lived with the "differences over identities and beliefs" and accepted diversity as part of our identity as a nation. The inability to live with diversity only makes you NOT Indonesian.

Yet in all contexts, still the issue comes down to the same lack of governance - which causes all kinds of disorders in Indonesia anything from political social and economy. Resources competition is just one effect/result from the lack of governance in social and economy, not the cause or the issue. However, when there is good governance, we have order in political social and economy, and as the result/effect, the country prospers.

So please Mr President, act as the leader of Indonesia! It's just a matter of exercising the great power given by the people of Indonesia with great responsibility for the people of Indonesia.

It still amazes me that these radicals who incite hatred and threaten, even carry out, such heinous and evil deeds, still have the hyprocisy to wear such splendid white robes. Then again, white/light for good and black/dark for evil is merely a man-made concept, stemming I feel, from his primordial and primitive, fear of the dark. Superstitions being played on yet again.

"Aside from diversity, the second issue cited by Yudhoyono is LACK OF GOVERNANCE that can lead to social and economic deprivation, which create political resentments and in turn fuel conflicts"

Yep, and this is where you EXCEL Mr President .....

Can we just have the pope rule this country?

Amid the spate of religious violence in the country, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Wednesday acknowledged before an international defense conference that “differences over identities and beliefs” has been be a source of conflict around the world.

Speaking at the opening of the Jakarta International Defense Dialogue, Yudhoyono listed issues that could easily spark conflict around the world.

“The first is what I call diversity issues, where differences over identities and beliefs can sadly turn into conflict and violence,” the president said.

“We are seeing cases, where disputes between religious groups can turn harmonious communities into sworn enemies overnight.

“And we are seeing rising cases of intolerance in many parts of developed and developing world,” he added.

While Yudhoyono's speech seemed to be directed at the state of the international affairs, Indonesia has been suffering from a spate of religious violence, particularly the aggression against the minority Ahmadiyah sect that led to the brutal killing of three its followers in Cikeusik, Banten.

Aside from diversity, the second issue cited by Yudhoyono is lack of governance that can lead to social and economic deprivation, which create political resentments and in turn fuel conflicts. The third issue is resources competition, "where we see a mismatch between the growing population, and declining basic life supplies available to them."

Yudhoyono also expressed his concern over the development of recent intra-state conflicts.

“Intra-state conflicts, which have been rising considerably to around 44 in the last few decades, despite few cases of peaceful resolution, do not show signs of significant reduction.

“We are also seeing persistent acts of terrorism, and the growing capacity of terrorist groups to mutate, adapt and present us with new challenges – such as the mail bombs in Indonesia,” Yudhoyono said.
