363441Oz journalists are a dumb lot, but fortunately pak SBY as a true democratic leader can handle this sort of publicity. Sadly some of SBY's staff have not made the transition they still have the old attitude of "Indonesia does what it wants" if they had the mindset to understand that Oz does have Quarantine Regs which are real they would have ensured the gift was compliant and not exposed their boss to such cheap shot publicity, Jagworth
@Peter, not sure how Rudd would go presiding over 235 million in a relatively new democracy, instead of only the 22 million he has in a comparatively rich country. Corruption?... ours here is hidden in a tangled web of bureaucracy, fees, taxes and charges put in place by our law makers... but therefore considered legitimate. We are about to be taxed on the very air we breathe with massive financial returns to big business.(Carbon credit scheme) I see that as real corruption.
dianne.-jo....Just a pity that he does not use his statesmanship to sort out the problems at home. His own country has been elevated to being number one in Asia.....as the most corrupt.
I was so very impressed with the RI President and how he came over in the media throughout his trip in Oz. I felt that he looked, acted, and spoke in true statesman style. In fact I wish I could vote for him instead of Rudd or Abbott. I feel that Rudd acts like an over excited school boy, always trying to add to his own self importance, especially around other leaders. In my mind we should put 'politicians' on the Australian skilled migration list and beg SBY to migrate. As for the coffee gift I cannot fathom why the journos have tried to make something of this, obviously short on stories.
Mr Rudd can eat Chinese food, so he should be able to handle Kopi Luwak no?
President Yudhoyono’s gift of civet coffee to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has run afoul of Australia’s bureaucracy.
Kopi Luwak, as it’s called in Indonesia, passes through the digestive tract of a civet cat before being roasted. It requires a special permit to enter Australia because it could “potentially be contaminated with exotic and endemic pathogens,” according to the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) website.
Yudhoyono’s gift did not have such a permit. The still-sealed beans have been shipped off to the AQIS for processing, according to The Age newspaper.
The coffee also raised some eybrows in the media, inspiring references to “crapuccino” and “dung diplomacy”.
Highly prized for its flavor, kopi luwak is known as the world’s most expensive coffee, commanding more than $600 per kilogram from online shops.
