Banda Aceh.  A joint rescue team is still searching for  missing flash flood victims in Aceh's Pidie district.

Hundreds of military and police personnel, as well as volunteers from several organizations including the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and the National Association for Amateur Radio (RAPI) are involved in evacuation and rescue efforts for flash flood victims, the district's spokesman, Sayuti, said on Tuesday.

The flash flood on Thursday night killed at least  11 people and destroyed more than 100 homes. Many people have been reported as still missing.

The flood, caused by heavy rains that caused major rivers to overflow, forced the residents of eight villages in Tangse subdistrict to flee towards higher ground.

Suadi Sulaiman, a member of the Pidie district legislature, said on Friday that the latest death toll was 11, with five dead in Alue Jambee village — all from the same family — three in Blang Dalam village, two in Layan village and one in Peunalom Satu village.

“The death toll could still rise, however, because several of the survivors have reported members of their families missing,” he said.
