Solo. Police have unearthed a second body in the backyard of a masseur arrested over the weekend after the body of a missing soldier was first found at his Pucangan village home near Solo, Central Java.
Yulianto, 38, was arrested on Saturday after the body of Special Forces (Kopassus) officer Corp. Santoso, 33, was found buried in his backyard two weeks after the soldier was reported missing.
Sukoharjo Subdistrict Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Suharyono said the second body was found on Monday, buried in a burlap sack.
“We found skeletal remains buried in the eastern end of the goat pen behind the suspect’s home,” Suharyono told the Jakarta Globe. “We’ve sent it to the forensic team to help us identify the victim.”
Coroner Kadarmo Aji said a preliminary examination of the remains suggested it was “a man aged between 45 and 60.” He added the body had been buried for at least a year.
Suharyono said Yulianto told investigators about the remains, and also confessed to killing Santoso for his cell phone, motorcycle and Rp 2.5 million ($280) in cash.
Investigators have since recovered the items at Yulianto’s home, as well as a herbal drink that they believe may have been used to poison the victim.
Yulianto, a masseur, was the last person known to have seen Santoso after the latter went to his home on Aug. 8 for a massage. He was never seen again.
Neighbors allege that Yulianto, who they describe as antisocial, may have killed several people over the years and buried them in his backyard.
They also think the second body recovered may be that of Sugiyo, a resident of Pucangan village who disappeared four years ago after becoming embroiled in a land dispute with Yulianto.
Sukoharjo Deputy Police Chief Comr. Hendra Setyawan, the lead investigator in the case, said police were looking into all the allegations.
“Besides the suspect’s confession, we also have the testimony of his wife, Sri Mulyani, and leads from the public which we have yet to rule out,” he said.
“We were led to the discovery of the second body by the suspect himself, although he has not said whether there are any others in the vicinity.”
Suharyono said police are looking into the possibility that Yulianto may have killed his victims in some sort of pagan ritual, citing the curious drink found at the house.
Col. Benny Sulistiono, the commander of the Kopassus 2nd Detachment in Solo, where Santoso was stationed, said the military would not intervene in the police investigation.
“This is a purely criminal case,” he said.
“While we can’t ignore the fact that the victim was a serving officer, we respect the police’s jurisdiction in this matter.”
