Residents living near Situ Gintung dam are worried that their lives are in danger now that the wet season has begun in Jakarta, bringing heavy rains.
The dam burst on March 27, 2008, killing more than 100 people. The dam is yet to be repaired.
Residents said they were worried that the landslide and massive flooding that cost so many lives would repeat itself in the coming months.
A few days ago, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo said it would better for Situ Gintung residents to relocate to safer areas. However, locals said they had never received any notifications or warning to move.
“When it rains, we run to the second floor,” a resident named Kasim told okezone.com.
Residents said the government had not fulfilled its promise to give them Rp 30 million in compensation for every damaged house.
Meanwhile, Fauzi said the government was ready to repair the dam. The General Work Office had prepared around Rp 97 billion to undertake the repair job.
