First thing to do if he is elected is to fire 75 % of the jakarta administration. Good luck to him to clean the cowshed.

After being named “Best Mayor 2011” for his service in the city of Solo, Joko Widodo may be aiming for the capital’s top spot.

Puan Maharani, an official with the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), confirmed on Tuesday that Joko had registered with the party as a possible candidate to run in the Jakarta gubernatorial election this July.

She said the party had conducted a survey to find the most popular candidates among nine potential contestants.

“Jokowi is one of the favorite candidates,” Puan, referring to Joko by his popular nickname, said on the sidelines of the PDI-P’s anniversary celebration.

However, Puan said that the party was still reviewing all the potential candidates.

“[We’re] still carry out political lobbying, as other parties have not been firm on their candidates either.”

A graduate of the forestry program at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Joko started his career as furniture salesman. With no political experience, he decided to run for mayor of Solo in 2005.

In 2008, he became the first Indonesian mayor to be invited by the United Nations to speak at the Governing Council forum in Geneva.

He also has built up an excellent reputation for running a clean government and being above corruption, for which he received the Bung Hatta Anti-Corruption Award in 2010. In April, the Home Affairs Ministry presented Joko with the “Best Mayor 2011” award.
