Seoul. South Korean firefighters were battling a blaze at an apartment complex in the southern port city of Busan on Friday, which forced the evacuation of residents but no major injuries were reported.

Television footage showed flames and smoke billowing out from the top of a 38-storey building as helicopters poured water to douse the fire.

Yonhap news agency said and one or two people were taken hospital for smoke inhalation but no other casualties were reported by mid-afternoon. About 26 people were evacuated.

The fire apparently started at a recycling storage area on the fourth floor and spread upwards quickly along the wooden panels of the outside walls.  However, Yonhap said the inside of the apartments were largely unaffected.

About 170 firefighters backed by 58 fire engines were struggling to bring  the blaze under control but were being hampered by strong winds, YTN TV said.
