A mother of eight children has submitted to police for DNA testing believing that her son is the suicide bomber that blew himself up in a mosque at Cirebon Police headquarters.

The man has been identified as Muchamad Syarif, 31, from Cirebon. His wife is understood to be expecting to deliver their child any day.

Supandi, the head of Cirebon neighborhood unit RT3/RW06 Pekalipan, told reporters that he also believed the bomber was Syarif.

Supandi described the alleged terrorist as a quiet, introverted and mysterious man who did not talk to his neighbors.

He said Syarif did not pray in the local mosque, probably because he had his own religious group.

The last time he saw him was last year when he married and moved to his wife’s house in Majalengka, the capital of Majalengka regency, West Java, Supandi said.

Suharto, 32, Syarif’s friend, said he could not believe Syarif was the bomber but after seeing a picture of the deceased man, said he believed it was.

He said that before Syarif was married he lived with his mother, who divorced from her husband, Syarif’s father, Abdul Ghofur, a couple of years ago.

Elang Rasyid, Syarif’s uncle, confirmed Syarif’s whereabouts were unknown.

“The police took me to Syarif’s wife’s house in Majalengka last night but he was not at home. When his wife, who is nine-months pregnant, tried to call him, his phone was switched off.”

Rasyid said Syarif’s wife last saw her husband on April 2 and he did not say where he was going.

He said both himself and Syarif’s wife said the picture looked like their family member.

Rasyid said it was good that Syarif had died.

“He is very strange. He shows hatred when he sees people gathering just to drink coffee.”

He said Syarif had shamed the family, which was descended from Cirebon royalty.

DNA tests are being undertaken to confirm the suspicions.
