Awoman in Jambi has reportedly given birth to a 5.5-kilogram baby via a Caesarian section.

The baby, the first child of Yuliana and Ermasnyah, was born in Raden Mahatter Regional Hospital, Antara reported on Wednesday.

There are no clear explanations so far for the unusual occurrence. Ermansyah, a resident of Telanaipura subdistrict, said his wife had not shown any abnormal signs while pregnant.

“I was so surprised when my baby was born weighing 5.5 kilograms because the pregnancy period was normal and my wife was eating normally,” he said.

Ermansyah said when Yuliana was about to give birth she began having some difficulties. He took her to a community health center where a midwife told them Yuliana had an excess of amniotic fluid.

Iswanto, a spokesman for Raden Mattaher Hospital, said the baby’s size could have been due to genetic factors. He said that the excessive weight could cause the child to suffer hypoglycemia or blood sugar irregularities.

Though certainly larger than usual, the couple’s baby is far below the size of current record holders.

In August last year, a woman from Madura Island gave birth to an 8-kilogram baby boy after a 12-month pregnancy, without the aid of a Caesarian section.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest baby ever was born to Anna Bates of Canada in 1879. The baby weighed 10.8 kg but died 11 hours after being delivered.
