The Central Jakarta Police on Wednesday detained a man who allegedly groped a woman on a TransJakarta bus.

The man’s arrest came as the TransJakarta management prepared to post pictures of sex pests in bus shelters in an attempt to fight sexual assaults.

“We decided to take Noor Adhim, 39, into custody because we believed he might skip town since he has no fixed address,” said Comr. Budi Sartono, the chief of detectives at the Central Jakarta Police.

Budi said police had questioned Noor for hours on Tuesday after the alleged victim, a 19-year old-college student, said she was terrified after what had happened to her on the bus.

“Noor is just a jobless man from Kudus in Central Java. We questioned him and the victim, TS,” Budi said.

“TS is the woman Noor [allegedly] groped on the bus plying the Pulogadung-Harmoni route on Tuesday.

“Noor has admitted to some of the accusations but denies others. We are still developing the case,” Budi said.

Central Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Hamidin said that the suspect had been taken into custody as a warning to anyone who might be tempted to molest women.

Hamidin said TS had boarded the bus at the Pulogadung bus shelter and the suspect had began to grope her almost immediately.

But he said that the woman had been so shocked that she did not react immediately.

A spokesman for the Jakarta Police, Sr. Comr. Boy Rafli Amar, said police would summon Jakarta Transportation Office officials and members of the TransJakarta management to discuss the issue.

“If necessary, we will provide security in the shelters and even in the buses,” Boy said.

He said the police also agreed pictures of sex pests should be posted at TransJakarta shelters and even in buses.

Boy said police strongly suggested TransJakarta install closed-circuit television in shelters and buses so there would be evidence when such incidents occurred.

Boy also urged TransJakarta to add more buses to the fleet to ensure that buses were not so crowded with passengers.

Perverts take advantage of such conditions, he said.

Boy urged people not to be afraid to report and file a police complaint if they were harassed on buses. “Victims must be questioned, because if they won’t talk to us the perpetrators will walk free,” he said.

He said police had to have at least two forms of evidence, one of them being testimony from the victim.

TransJakarta official Bano Yogaswara said pictures of offenders would be displayed in bus shelters.

The plan was still being worked out and it was expected to be implemented soon.

“We will display the faces of violators who have been arrested and interrogated for crimes, such as sexual offenders and pickpockets,” he said.

Meanwhile, safety stickers will be posted across TransJakarta bus shelters.

Bano said the stickers would include tips on orderly queueing and following officers’ directions, being careful when getting on and off buses, not congregating in the center of the bus, noting the number of the bus and remembering to immediately report any kind of disturbance.
