After a recent string of deaths in police custody, another man was found dead in his police cell on Monday, this time in West Sulawesi.

Sahabuddin, who was in detention for allegedly stealing a mobile phone, was found hanged in his cell’s bathroom in the police station at Tinambung subdistrict in Polewali Mandar on Monday morning, the police reported.

Police spokesman I Gusti Ngurah Rai Mahaputra said the police believe he hanged himself with his jeans. “For the time being, the suspect is considered to have died by suicide,” I Gusti Ngurah Rai said.

Police sources said officials from the internal affairs department would interview the officers who were on duty at the time and responsible for checking on the detainees.

Sahabuddin’s body has been taken to Polewali Mandar Hospital for a postmortem examination.

He had reportedly been caught stealing a mobile phone from a sales counter in Tinambung on Friday night. Locals beat him before handing him over to the police.

The police said he had already been jailed three times for theft.
