Denpasar. A Swedish tourist died after he fell into the crater of Mount Batur, an active volcano on Bali, police on the island said on Wednesday.

The tourist, identified as Daniel Erick Petersen, 25, had climbed Batur with two fellow Swedes and a guide early on Wednesday to enjoy the sunrise from the top of the 1,717-meter mountain, Kintamani subdistrict police chief Made Oka said.

The victim apparently went too near the rim of the steep crater and fell. The guide immediately descended the mountain to alert police while the two other Swedes remained at the location of the accident.

The victim was found dead some 100 meters down the slope of the crater and the body was retrieved at about 1 p.m., Oka said.

“In addition to severe injuries on his head, most parts of his body were bruised,” said the officer, who helped retrieve the body.

Rescuers had to use a rope to retrieve the body as the crater wall was very steep, said the head of the Bali Search and Rescue Agency, Ketut Parwa.

Oka said police determined from questioning the two Swedes and the guide that the fall had been an accident.

“The area around the rim was quite slippery in the morning. In such circumstances, the victim’s colleagues and the guide could not possibly rescue him by going down into the crater,” he said, adding that rain had fallen in the area.

Petersen’s body was taken to Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar for an autopsy, officials said.

Mount Batur, in Bangli district, is about 90 kilometers north of Denpasar. As many as 26 eruptions of the volcano have been recorded between 1804 and 2000.
