The Ministry of Health confirmed on Friday that a man who was initially thought to have died as a result of contracting bird flu was instead killed by complications caused by the H1N1 virus, formerly known as the swine flu.
Rohmad, 18, from Mekarsari in Tangerang, died on Wednesday in the isolation ward at Tangerang General Hospital. He had been admitted last week complaining of high fever, shortness of breath and a sore throat.
“It’s true, the cause of death of the Tangerang resident was because of the H1N1 virus, not H5N1 [bird flu],” Ministry of Health official Trihono said on Friday.
Before his death on Wednesday, Rohmad had been tested twice for bird flu, following the death of two North Jakarta residents infected with the H5N1 virus.
Trihono urged the public not to be alarmed, saying that H1N1 was usually only deadly in people with weak immune systems or other health complications.
“As for the man in Tangerang, I cannot reveal any information on why such complications happened or why the patient had a weak immune system,” Trihono said, citing patient confidentiality policies.
The H1N1 virus was first discovered in Mexico, April 2009. In a short period of time, it spread to 75 other countries, leading the World Health Organization to briefly declare the outbreak a pandemic.
