Jakarta. Indonesian footballers showed their determination to stand tall after the Merah Putih suffered its first defeat in this year's Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup, falling 3-0 to Malaysia in the first leg of the final at Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
“There's still another 90 minutes in Jakarta, friends. Keep up the spirit!” striker Bambang Pamungkas wrote on his Twitter account @bepe20.
Indonesia is playing in the tournament final for the first time since 2005, when it lost to Singapore 2-1.
But this was a defeat few Indonesia fans thought would be so lopsided. Indonesia had not lost its past five matches, although they were all held in the friendly confines of Jakarta’s Bung Karno Stadium.
Similar enthusiasm was voiced by striker Irfan Bachdim on his Twitter account @IrfanBachdim10.
On Monday, Irfan tweeted, “Lets forget yesterday and make things right in Jakarta!”
During last night's match, Indonesian Twitter users were angered by the laser lights being flashed by home fans, particularly toward goalkeeper Markus Harison.
Referee Toma Masaaki stopped the match in the 53rd minute after Indonesia complained that the lights were being aimed at players as they tried to defend against a Malaysian free kick. The game was resumed after eight minutes.
However, Irfan Bachdim refused to blame the loss on the laser lights.
“Can not sleep after this loss! But chin up we can do it in Jakarta! No bullsh*t no excuses with lasers we have to do better than last night!!" he tweeted.
