Tifatul Sembiring has caused outrage with his claims that the money ear-marked for use in AIDS/HIV awareness would be better off elsewhere. (JG Photo) Related articles

Again it comes down to Education. Indonesians need education about HIV. The Communications and Information Technology Minister is obviously not educated and if his recommendation is followed, the numbers of Indonesians with HIV will only rise.
Australia provides aid to Indonesia to the tune of billions of dollars. During the period 2008-2015, $100 million of that aid has been set aside specifically to combat aids and help those suffering from the disease. If Australia recognises Indonesia has a problem why doesn't the Information Minister?.
At least two-thirds of our miseries spring from human stupidity, human malice and those great motivators and justifiers of malice and stupidity: idealism, dogmatism and proselytizing zeal on behalf of religous or political ideas. - Quote by: Aldous Huxley
Minister Tifatul Sembiring should stick to his field of responsibility, i.e. technology, rather than speaking about health issues.
I appreciate Edo's criticism of Titaful, who by now has gained a reputation for making groundless, biased statements, but who ever claimed that watching pornography could lead to casual sex? Many things can lead to casual sex. Is casual sex a bad thing? Well how you rate that probably depends on your (religious) background, so I'll leave that in the middle for now, but saying pornography leads to it, that I strongly doubt. Probably it even leads to less adultery for example, as pornography can excite people stuck in a monotonous sexual relationship in ways that allow them to stay faithful to their wives/husbands..
We can be sure that none of the "bad" phenomena of modern society will actually decrease with a rule based on fundamentalist morals, but we can also be sure that when that day arrives, those phenomena will no longer be discussed in the public/media, so that it will look like they are no longer there. And don't forget that Arabs are amongst the world's most avid consumers of pornography!
isahbiazhar......you say that the government has a responsibility to ban immoral content on the internet. Is that really what you want? Do you honestly believe that you have legislators and ministers in Indonesia who are able to be trusted with such a responsibility? Do you not believe they just might use such powers for their own agendas? You obviously choose not to view porn, but would you like to loose the right of choice?
I personally think that many Indonesians, both young and old, spend a ridiculous amount of time on social network sites on the internet, which is where the film in this case was posted, not on a porn site. Could the reason for this be that they have little else to do? No parks and open spaces, no nice walkways, no clean rivers to enjoy, no museums, theaters, libraries. Basically almost zero recreational and sport facilities and no real transport network to get anywhere. Could these factors not have something to do with the reason why almost everybody seems to have a mobile permanently attached to their hands in this country?
And religion, should not religion be a guiding force, rather than one that dictates how people should live their lives? Perhaps religion should be a little bit more about the way people act and true belief, rather than being so obsessed with thoughtless ritual?
Do you also not think that everybody should stop getting so wound up by this ridiculous pantomime and concentrate on the real problems that are infecting your society?
Communications and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring has launched another tirade against pornography, this time linking it to the country’s rising HIV/AIDS rate in comments that were immediately attacked by activists who work in the field.
Tifatul said on Thursday that increased access to pornography had fueled a surge in promiscuity, which he claimed was responsible for a rise in HIV/AIDS infections in the country.
The minister, who has courted controversy in the past with statements such as the ones he made last November linking immorality and natural disasters, said the money used on HIV/AIDS programs could be better spent elsewhere.
“Every year the state spends Rp 180 billion [$19.6 million] to deal with the problems caused by [sex outside of wedlock], such as the spread of HIV/AIDS,” Tifatul said. “The budget could actually be reduced and the money allocated for other things that are beneficial to the country.”
However, Adithya “Edo” Wardana, the program manager for the Stigma Foundation, an NGO focusing on HIV/AIDS harm reduction, said government funding was already insufficient.
“It’s ridiculous to even think about reducing the budget and allocating it to other programs of dubious merit,” he said.
Edo said an assessment of HIV/AIDS-related programs this year had concluded existing funding would cover just 60 percent of needed programs, while the rest would have to be covered by foreign donors.
He conceded watching pornography could lead to casual sex, but said the main cause of the spread of HIV infections was unsafe sex.
“I’m not saying casual sex is OK in Indonesia, where traditional Eastern values still prevail,” he said. “But to directly link pornography to HIV is just wrong.”
Omar Syarif, an HIV/AIDS activist from the Indonesian Network of People Living With HIV (Jothi), said the minister’s statement was in stark conflict to a decree issued by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Bali earlier this year.
He said Yudhoyono had then instructed all regional administrations to increase their efforts to tackle the rising HIV/AIDS transmission rate.
“For the minister to call for the national HIV/AIDS budget to be reduced is both baseless and unwise,” Omar said.
Kemal Siregar, deputy for program development at the National AIDS Commission, also said there was no reason to slash the HIV/AIDS budget, saying it had been drawn up after long and careful consideration.
“We considered every single aspect to achieve the targets set by the UN in its Millennium Development Goals,” he said.
