Hughes, have you ever lived and worked in the Middle East that you can make a statement that rape and sexually aggressive behaviour is rampant? You know the Middle East is not only Saudi if you think of that country alone.Iran is not a Middle Eastern country. I have worked since 1980 on and off in Kuwait, UAE, Qatar,Saudi,Oman and that sort of things were absolutely not tolerated.Don't think it is all honki dori in the western world.Especially in societies where you have plenty of these extreme far right christian lunies.Ever heard about those preaching lunies in the usa?

Everybody knows that rape and sexually aggressive behaviour is rampant in repressed middle eastern countries. I personally think that's because sex is so taboo there so everyone is frustrated. Its not normal. Is indonesia going to end up like that too? If so, we'll have to teach all would-be sex offenders how to link to a proxy server to by pass Tiffy's porn blockade.

@spammer:

Not psychological effects, but I know of studies that prove inverse correlation between pornography and rape and other crime.

Since I can't post link here, search for "Pornography, Rape, and Sex Crimes in Japan"

Here's the abstract:

"The research examined the incidence of murder and nonsexual violent crimes for comparison and as control measures. Data included official statistics on reported sex crimes and qualitative and quantitative data on the amount of pornographic materials available. The number and availability of sexually explicit materials increased in Japan over the years 1972-95. At the same time, the incidence of rape declined from 4,677 cases with 5,464 offenders in 1972 to 1,500 cases with 1,160 offenders in 1995. The number of rapes committed by juveniles also markedly decreased. The incidence of sexual assault declined from 3,139 cases in 1972 to fewer than 3,000 cases for each year during 1975-90. The incidence of reported public indecencies decreased by about one-third. Marked declines also occurred in the numbers of murders and nonsexual violent physical assaults. Murders dropped by some 40 percent; nonsexual physical assaults decreased by about 60 percent. Findings were similar to those in Denmark, Sweden, and West Germany. Findings were also consistent with what is known about property crime rates in Japan. Nevertheless, the myth persists that an abundance of sexually explicit material invariably leads to an abundance of sexual activity and eventually rape. A variety of societal factors may relate to the decrease in sex offenses. Nevertheless, the data make clear that a massive increase in available pornography in Japan has been correlated with a marked decrease in sex offenses, particularly among juveniles as perpetrators or victims. That really is unfortunate, I'll have to 'read' something else while sitting on the toilet should this guy actually have any real clout? I suppose Glodok will always have ample supplies on DVD should I find myself with nothing to do on a weekend, so never fear. At least I'll know I'm supporting the local police and god knows who else during the transaction.

BTW Has anyone heard of any studies related to the psychological effects on a society where pornography was truly eradicated ?

Nobody cares about porn!! There are hundreds of more pressing and realistic applications of communication technology: intelligent traffic control, monitoring the destinations of public funds, helping to fix the broken school system, and disrupting terrorist communication are but a few realistic concerns that face all Indonesians. It is hard to think of something more futile waste of effort than this.

Jakarta. Following the public support he gained for his efforts to eliminate access to pornography on the Internet, the communications and information technology minister is now setting his sights on another medium: the BlackBerry.

Tifatul Sembiring has threatened to shut down BlackBerry services in Indonesia if its manufacturer fails to block access to pornographic Web sites on the smartphone.

But an IT expert on Wednesday said Tifatul’s efforts were misdirected because Web sites could only be blocked by the cellphone companies providing Internet access to the devices.

Tifatul on Tuesday said the ministry had summoned representatives from the Indonesian office of Research in Motion, the Canadian manufacturer of BlackBerry, and requested them to restrict access to pornographic Web sites on the smartphones.

“We have asked them to do this, otherwise we will close down their operations here because they failed to comply with our laws,” he said.

Muhammad Jumadi, secretary general of the Indonesia Telecommunications User Group, said he supported Tifatul’s policy, but as long as its implementation came with clear procedures.

“Technically speaking, it is possible to apply such a regulation,” he said, adding that since many people now accessed the Internet through their smartphones, the government should also address restricting access to pornographic material through BlackBerrys.

However, Jumadi said the filtering of offensive Web sites could only be done through Internet service providers or telecommunications operators.

As long as there were clear guidelines from the ministry, he said, operators would be able to filter sites.

The BlackBerry Internet Service is made available in Indonesia through six major telecommunications operators, while the BlackBerry Enterprise Server is provided directly by RIM.

Tifatul acknowledged on Tuesday that the government still had a lot of work to do to restrict access to pornographic Web sites.

“But we’ll keep working on it, including perfecting the software and coordinating with the Internet service providers,” he said.

Last month, Tifatul’s plan to block offensive Internet content came under fire when several Web sites that were not pornographic could not be accessed for a few hours, presumably as a result of the filter.

But Tifatul has claimed victory, arguing that up to 90 percent of the pornographic Web sites on the Internet are now inaccessible in Indonesia. “I frequently check on them through my cellphone and they are now blocked,” he said.

Considering the popularity of BlackBerrys among Indonesians, Jumadi said that restricting Web sites would not bother the average BlackBerry user.

“I don’t think customers of BlackBerry would be affected in terms of numbers,” he said.
