I'm sure a thorough investigation will be carried out and the culprits found to have no connection to the incident.

Corruption investigator Tama Satrya Langkun had told the Jakarta Globe prior to his brutal beating early on Thursday morning that he was being stalked.

Over the weekend, Tama, from Indonesia Corruption Watch, said he received a phone call from a man who claimed to be a reporter with the Kompas newspaper to conduct a joint investigation.

Tama invited the person — who identified himself as “Roni” —at ICW’s headquarters but he refused.

“Roni called me repeatedly but his voice changed with each call even though the calls were made from one number,” Tama said.

On Monday, ‘Roni’ called Tama at 11 a.m. and said that he was outside the ICW office. Tama asked him to come in but he refused and waited at a security post near Tama’s office.

Tama went outside and observed “Roni” sitting at the security post. He also saw a Toyota Kijang with four people inside. Parked near the car were two motorbikes.

Tama did not approach the men but he wrote down the license plate numbers of the car and motorcycles.

The men waited for him until 8 p.m. that evening when Tama and his colleague, Febri Hendri, left the office on two separate motorbikes.

The men followed them on their motorcycles. In front of Kalibata Mall, Tama split from Febry and he heard one of his stalker’s yell: “Follow the black motorbike [Tama’s]!” Fearing for his safety, he headed back to his office and stayed there.

At 3 a.m. on Thursday, after watching a World Cup match, Tama and colleague Khadafi are stopped by four men on two motorycles in Duren Tiga in Pasar Minggu and attacked.

Prior to the attack, Tama was one of the Indonesian Corruption Watch activists who provided the Corruption Eradication Commission with details about millions of dollars of money in the bank accounts of a number of police generals.

On June 28, a Tempo issue on the bank accounts of six police generals is sold out by mystery men in Jakarta. Police are forced to deny suggestions they were involved and immediately threaten to sue the magazine, not for the contents of the article, but the cover illustration that uses images of three piggy banks.

Tama writes on Twitter, “Sawah Besar Police Chief suddenly bought many copies of this week’s Tempo magazine ... what’s happening? why, the police suddenly like to read?”

Early on Tuesday morning, two men on a motorcycle throw three Molotov cocktails at Tempo magazine’s offices though no damage was caused.

Speaking after the attack on Thursday, Taman said he saw the attack as a threat. “It was probably a warning to ICW given through me but for what case we can’t be sure yet.”
