Well of course, the question is, can the police themselves be trusted to look into cases of police abuse against civilians?

Do you trust the police to investigate themselves and bring members of their own ranks to justice?

Besides, his response is too little, too late. Usual waffle.

My only question is why are police involved in torture/assault or even worse murder only demoted/fired. They should be jailed for long terms.

National Police chief Timur Pradopo promised on Wednesday that he would work to put an end to civilian deaths at the hands of police, following recent deadly crackdowns during land and mining disputes.

“In handling such cases, especially if a fact-finding team has been established, all sides should be listened to to prevent repeated cases,” Timur said during a National Police meeting. “Provincial police chiefs should prepare to be able to handle these cases.”

On Tuesday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono warned police to use force only against rioters and those using violence.

His comments came on the heels of a National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) report that gave police the dishonor of being the arm of the government most often reported to the commission in 2011.
