State toll road operator Jasa Marga has agreed to close the Semanggi I toll gate in a bid to manage crippling traffic at the heart of the capital, an official said on Friday, though a date has not been set.

Sr. Comr. Dwi Sigit Nurmantyas, the Jakarta Police traffic director, said the worsening traffic was forcing him to deploy up to 15 officers in the vicinity of the gate, located on Jalan Gatot Subroto near the Plaza Semanggi shopping center.

“We have communicated with Jasa Marga, arguing that traffic there has become too crowded,” he said, explaining that drivers coming from Jalan Thamrin had to cross lanes and fight oncoming traffic from the Slipi area on their way to the toll gate.

Jasa Marga president director Adityawarman said his office had agreed to the plan but added that more booths would need to be built at Semanggi II.

The city government, he said, must also add more lanes to Jalan Gatot Subroto.

“We are waiting for the city government to make its move,” he said, adding that there was still no set date for the Semanggi I toll gate to close permanently.
