Always good for a laugh the Jakarta newspapers.

More effective though to just split Jakarta into East for men and West for women.

I think Transjakarta as a respectable transport company, catering mainly for the middle class, should even go one step further and separate in addition by skin color, e.g. certain (of cause not cushioned) seats marked "Colored Only". A bit of Apartheid here and there can't hurt!

JUST BEING SARCASTIC!

However I have to agree that that this is one of the most stupid actions cooked up. Nevertheless, I am sure in one week or so a spokesperson of this company will say that they received sooo many positive comments about this implementation that they will keep it until further notice. I bet! And 'Yes", the solution would be more buses, covering all installed bus ways, a tighter schedule and of course CCTV cameras in the buses, prominently installed so everyone can see them. But of course that's too expensive compared to a few hundred copied pictograms.

A saying I use a lot is "ONLY in Indonesia!!!" - where else in the world would one complaint about "groping" receive such a knee-jerk action? Watching television this morning seemed many women wanted to remain in the "men's queue" while others asked "what happens with a husband and wife travelling together - or male/female partners and friends together? I predict that within one week this crazy exercise which is a logistical nightmare will be yet another passing phase - just like policing busways and ticketing private motorists using them. I must check-out Harmoni today around 5 p.m. and see the absolute chaos if they are trying to implement segregated boarding - great material for a comedy sketch on local TV I should think.

This is stupid anyway. What if i am with my wife and kids? I have to separate from them. Now i cant protect her and we could get on different buses. Do they actually think before they make these decisions. Morons! Just get more buses

They are missing the real cause here. There are not enough buses. If there were more buses then there would be seats for everyone and no crowds and mad rush. There would not be as many opportunities to grope people. Just buy more buses!

Transjakarta launched a trial on Thursday to separate male and female bus commutators in response to alleged instances of groping and frotting by sexual perverts.

The scheme, however, reportedly ran to immediate problems because both the busway shelters and the busway buses themselves only have one door, thereby precluding any strict splitting of the sexes.

Iqbal Gaffar, a manager with Transjakarta, told the Jakarta Globe that the move was undertaken in response to the recent groping incident aboard the often densely packed buses.

“We are going to try it out for at least a week,” he said.

To separate the sexes and lessen the likelihood of groping and rubbing, Transjakarta had installed A4-sized pieces of paper indicating that men were required to stand on the left and women on the right.

As witnessed by the Jakarta Globe, the separation process, however, went out the window whenever a bus arrived and the usual crush to board the bus ensued and alleged instructions from above that passengers were to be separated while on the bus also, were not passed on to staff manning the shelters.

Ari Kuncoro, barrier officer at the Polda busway shelter, on Jalan Sudirman said that in several shelters there were only two officers and it was therefore impossible to get people to queue up according to sex.
