361926I think ugly's a bit harsh, it's just too small. Now Heathrow...there's an ugly airport.
Bali needs to take care not only of the airport. Have you ever dreamed of having a romantic dinner on Jimbaran beach with a nice view on the trash left by the tide? Why the owners of the restaurants there are not taking care of the beach in front of their business? Only pigs like to eat in the trash. Tourists will come once and then never come back. Bali is dying . Only blind people don't see it.
It is so very ugly and is the shame of Bali. Ngurah Rai should be as pretty as Bali itself, not a big let down. And gimme usable toilets please, not only in Ngurah Rai airport, but at any Indonesian airport (including Terminal 2 Cengkareng!)
No! The domestic terminal is quite beautiful. No, Frankfurt or Heathrow are much better contenders for the title.
Well to say its ugly is a bit harsh. Its small and incapable of handling large capacities which causes mayhem when 4 flights arrive at once. They cannot organize or administer it with effeciency. Baggage handlers inside the terminal are absolute gangsters and prey on the elderly. I have stepped in on so many occassions to stop elderly travellers being conned by these crooks, I feel like the unofficial airport security guy!! Its not the way people should start thier holiday... come on dudes you can do so much better...
Few travelers who have flown in to Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport find much to praise about it. Now they are joined by one of the travel world’s most influential magazines, which judges it as among the world’s ugliest airports.
“Confoundingly grim... a dingy concourse. Low ceilings, very low lighting, chairs randomly here and there, and lots of gray,” reads the critique by readers of the venerable New York-based magazine Travel+Leisure, which boasts five million readers. “And you know an airport’s got problems when its most eye-catching feature is a McDonald’s.”
The criticism has been keenly felt by tourism officials, who singled out toilets as an area of concern. “We do believe that the toilets are clean enough, but when the number of tourists is at a peak, there is a good chance that the toilets become dirtier,” said Surya Dharma, spokesman for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
“We realize the airport is too small for the thousands of tourists arriving every day,” he said, adding that having to line up for toilets after a flight would annoy travelers — perhaps ones involved in informal magazine reviews.
The magazine said the list was compiled using an “unscientific survey of design-savvy frequent fliers” to determine the worst aesthetic offenders. Alongside Bali was an eclectic list including Moscow, Tokyo, Bahamas, New York, Paris and London’s Heathrow. One saving grace was that the list disregarded airports in war zones or “highly impoverished” countries.
Iqbal Allan, the head of the Indonesian Congress and Convention Association agreed. “Some 1.5 million tourists visit Bali per year, and the Ngurah Rai Airport is too small to accommodate that number of people.”
The Bali administration, he said, should take heed of the survey because the island is the most popular tourist destination in the country. “We cannot afford to lose tourists just because of its airport’s ugly condition.”
A Rp 1.7 trillion ($180 million) upgrade and expansion is planned for Ngurah Rai, but the start date has not been revealed.
