"Iwan had only admitted to receiving Rp 10 million as a “religious allowance” from Gayus."

I think with this statement alone he should be jailed to the maximum. A police officer shouldn't be taking money from a corruption suspect in detention no matter what the reason is.

Bandung. A police officer who allegedly let infamous tax official Gayus Tambunan leave detention as many as 68 t i mes stood as the primary defendant in a bribery trial that opened on Friday.

Prosecutors at the Bandung Anti-Corruption Court accused Comr. Iwan Siswanto, the former chief warden at the National Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) headquarters, of receiving bribes totalling Rp 264 million ($30,000) from Gayus in exchange for letting him out of the heavily guarded facility in Depok.

“Between July 2010 and November 5, 2010, defendant Iwan Siswanto, without receiving any permission from his superiors who oversaw the detention of Gayus, allowed Gayus to roam freely outside the detention center for, at the very least, 68 times,” prosecutor Sila Pulungan told the court on Friday.

Sila said that Iwan was guilty of violating a number of corruption laws.

Iwan faces a maximum of 20 years in jail if convicted.

He was implicated in the case in November, after Gayus was photographed by the Jakarta Globe attending a tennis match in Bali when he should have been behind bars. Iwan and eight other police officers were arrested after the photo came to light.

At the time, Iwan’s attorney, Berlin Pandiangan, said that from July to August, Gayus had given Iwan Rp 50 million a month and Rp 5 million a week. From September to October, the weekly amount fell to Rp 3.5 million, but the monthly fee doubled to Rp 100 million, he said.

But on Friday, Berlin denied his client had been taken bribes, saying that Iwan had only admitted to receiving Rp 10 million as a “religious allowance” from Gayus.

In November, Berlin had said that fellow inmates and National Police officers Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji and Sr. Comr. Wiliardi Wizar had each given Iwan Rp 10 million as well, but he later insisted that the funds were compassionate donations to help Iwan’s wife, who was said to be ill, and not bribes.

It is unlikely that either Susno or Wiliardi will stand trial for the alleged bribes due to a lack of evidence, police have said.

Gayus was convicted in January of bribing a judge and police officers to ensure his acquittal in his first trial in Tangerang last year, which centered on Rp 28 billion ($3.1 million) in his personal bank accounts.

He is awaiting further trials stemming from revelations that he traveled to Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau while he supposed to be in detention.

Iwan’s trial is scheduled to resume on Friday.
