Duta Graha Indah construction firm’s marketing manager Mohammad El Idris is the first person to be tried by the Anti-Corruption Court for his alleged links to a high-profile graft scandal linked to construction of an athletes’ village for the upcoming Southeast Games.

El Idris, whose trial opened on Wednesday, was arrested in April by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) together with Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry secretary Wafid Muharram. Idris stands accused of bribing Wafid with Rp 3.29 billion ($385,000) and former Democratic Party treasurer and fugitive graft suspect Muhammad Nazaruddin with Rp 4.4 billion in an attempt to secure lucrative building contracts.

Mindo Rosalina Manulang, allegedly a broker in the bribe case, was also arrested and is scheduled to face her first court hearing on July 20.

“The defendant Mohamad El Idris on his own or together with Dudung Purwadi and Rosalina, in February and April, at Permai Group’s office and the [sport’s] ministry’s office, conducted several actions that violated the law,” prosecutor Agus Salim said in court.

Dudung is the executive director of DGI, and hasn’t yet been named as a suspect, while Permai Group is the holding company of Anak Negeri, both of which are owned by Nazaruddin, and where Rosalina worked as a marketer.

“Wafid has the authority to issue and sign a decree on the athletes’ village construction, and Nazaruddin as a member of the House of Representatives had sought that DGI be the winner of the tender for the construction of the athletes’ village and multipurpose hall [in Palembang, South Sumtra],” Agus continued.

Idris faces a maximum of five years in prison and a Rp 250 million fine. The trial resumes on July 20.
