Two earthquakes, a 6.3 and a 5.7 magnitude, struck in Nusa Tenggara and North Sulawesi on Saturday, causing panic, but no casualties.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman, reported that the 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Manggarai regency in East Nusa Tenggara.

“The earthquake, occurred early on Saturday and lasted three seconds. The earthquake caused panic, but there is no potential of a tsunami,” Sutopo said.

The quake struck 124 kilometers deep in the ocean and around 28 kilometers off the coast of West Manggarai.

Two hours later, a 5.7-magnitude quake struck Sangihe. The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and around 128 kilometers northwest of the Sangihe islands.

“This is categorized as a weak earthquake and there is no tsunami potential either. Residents have returned to normal activities,” Sutopo said.

He called for residents to remain cautious.
